Action Agenda : Things for you to do.

In this area will be posted actions you can take to help wildlife throughout the world. This will include projects or activities of other groups as well as projects of ZooCheck NZ. In this way we can all actively assist in the conservation and protection of wildlife. Remember to bookmark this page and check back whenever possible as it will be updated regularly and many of the actions listed will often need to be undertaken at short notice.

New Zealand Fur Seals at Risk

Despite being protected throughout our 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone by the Marine Mammals Protection Act, fur seals are still at risk from human activities. The Act needs strengthening to stop the continuing high level of seal deaths. From 1989 to 1994 an estimated 4,000 fur seals were drowned in the hoki, squid and southern blue whiting fisheries (this is a conservative extrapolation from observed catches.

Join the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society's Fur Seal campaign to help this threatened species.

Albatrosses - Long-lived or Longlined : An International Problem

Six of the world's 14 albatross species are in decline and longline fishing is implicated in each case. Some of these species are on the path to extinction. In the last 20 years, around 65,000 albatrosses and petrels have been drowned on tuna longline hooks within our 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone.

Support the Royal Forest and Bird Society's initiatives to protect our seabirds.
